About Friday Night Funkin (FNF)

Friday Night Funkin is a rhythm game in which Boyfriend answers his opponents with music. Watch the moving notes and press the matching direction as each one reaches its target. You can play in the game panel above without downloading a separate game file.

The story behind the battles

Boyfriend wants to spend time with Girlfriend, but her father stands in the way. Daddy Dearest is a former rock star, so the confrontation becomes a musical contest. Instead of fighting with weapons, Boyfriend has to keep up with his rival's phrases and answer them on beat.

That premise gives the battles a purpose without requiring a long introduction. The characters perform their parts, the music sets the pace, and the player takes over when Boyfriend's notes arrive. A successful run depends on following the chart, not choosing dialogue or exploring a map.

How FNF began

FNF started as a project for Ludum Dare 47, a game jam, and was built with HaxeFlixel. Its Newgrounds release followed in November 2020. The artwork, music, and short musical encounters gave the game an identity that fans could recognize beyond a single song.

The project also has a public source repository and official modding documentation. Fan-made mods can change songs, opponents, artwork, and mechanics. On fnfmods, this page is the starting point for the base game; the mod collection is where you can try those different interpretations.

How to play Friday Night Funkin

  1. Start the game in the panel above and select from the options in its menu.
  2. Watch the notes move toward the fixed direction markers.
  3. Press the matching direction when a note overlaps its marker. Hold the input for a sustained note until its tail finishes.
  4. Keep following the chart through the song. If you lose, retry and work on the passage that caused trouble.

The standard keyboard inputs are the arrow keys or WASD. For phone play, use the game's touch controls. Rotating your phone can give the game panel more space; the Fullscreen button below the panel can also help.

Practice the rhythm, not just the speed

FNF results screen showing total notes, max combo, note judgments, misses, and a score of 9315.
The results screen breaks down your note judgments, misses, and max combo. Use these to see what changes between attempts.

Start with an easier setting when the menu offers one. Listen for repeated musical phrases and learn their note patterns. During a long note, keep holding instead of tapping repeatedly. For a dense run, focus on the next few notes rather than trying to read the whole screen at once.

Missing one passage does not mean you need to restart immediately. Continue when the game lets you: reaching the later part of a song gives you another pattern to learn. Take a break if repeated attempts make your timing less consistent.

Story Mode, Free Play, and game versions

Story Mode groups songs into a sequence of encounters. Free Play is useful when you want to select a particular song and repeat it. Check the menu in the game panel for the choices available in this browser build.

Week 7 in this browser build

The week-selection screen includes Week 7 with Tankman and the tracks Ugh, Guns, and Stress. The screenshot shows Easy selected, with arrows beside the difficulty setting. This confirms Week 7 is included here; it does not establish that every later official update is included.

FNF has received updates since its early release. A browser build and the current official release may contain different songs, modes, or settings. This page does not promise every official update. You can also open our separate Week 7 game page; check each game's menu to see its available content.

Frequently asked questions

Is Friday Night Funkin free to play here?

Yes. You can use the game panel on this page without paying or creating a fnfmods account.

Can I play on my phone?

You can use the browser game's touch controls on your phone. If the panel is too small, try landscape orientation or fullscreen. A keyboard uses the direction keys instead of the on-screen inputs.

Does this page include every week and the latest update?

This browser build includes Week 7, as shown in the selection screen above. That does not mean it includes every later update. Visit the official release linked below for the developers' current version.

What can I try if the game does not respond?

On a computer, click inside the game panel before using the keyboard. If loading stops, refresh the page and try again. Refreshing may lose your current run. If the problem continues, try another browser or the official game page.

How is the original game different from an FNF mod?

The base game supplies the characters and rhythm format. A mod adapts that foundation with its own content. Try Vs. Garcello or Vs. KAPI when you want a different opponent, or Character Test Playground 2 to experiment with sounds and animations.

Who made Friday Night Funkin?

The original team credits ninjamuffin99 for programming, PhantomArcade and evilsk8r for art, and Kawai Sprite for music. The project is presented by The Funkin' Crew. fnfmods is an independent game site, not the developer of Friday Night Funkin.

For the original release and credits, visit FNF on Newgrounds or the developer's itch.io page. Development history and modding links are available in the official source repository.
